Is it worth it to reupholster?

Updated: Nov 24, 2022

There are a few things that can help you make a decision:

Do you love the piece? It might be a unique vintage piece or just really comfy.

Does it fit well in your space? Maybe it just fits perfectly into the room you have it in?

This smaller sized love seat received a complete makeover by removing the skirt and adding new fabric and new legs painted to match the upholstery!

Typically older furniture is all well made! Here is a piece that was abandoned on the side of the road!

Does it have sentimental value?

Many pieces have been passed down through generations. This unique rocker was used by my customers great grandmother!

Maybe you want something one of kind that could never be purchased? Does this Wing Back Chair look like a men's suit? That was the plan! My customer at Daniels Custom Clothing has this chair in his shop.

What do you think... could you ever buy a sofa like this at the store?

With furniture you do truly get what you pay for

You can certainly buy a new piece of furniture for less than it would cost to reupholster. However, the "great buy" will usually need to be replaced in about 5-7 years. The fabric will not wear as long and the foam will break down and be less comfortable.

A good quality new piece will most likely last longer than 10 years. I have seen good quality pieces that are still in excellent condition after 25 years the fabric is just out of date!

Usually buying the high end furniture (the Bentlleys and the Cadillacs) new will be much more expensive than reupholstering.

It's great idea to buy quality furniture used then get it reupholstered!

This Mid-Century sofa is a great example!
